Chapter 10
Ryder stared up at the night sky contemplatively. He had never in his life given the moon much thought. It had always just been one of the many things in the heavens and not terribly remarkable to him. Ryder had always focused on things a little closer to Earth.
Of course, everything was different now. The moon and its shifting phases now impacted him directly. In some ways, it stood as an unavoidable reminder of the curse he and Tucker were under. As it rose in the night sky, it seemed to look down on them and call to them.
Even now, with it not even being visible, Ryder felt the connection. He wondered how and why the power of the moon waxed and waned. It was always up there. What illuminated it was actually the sun. The waxing and waning were a result of the moon and the Earth shifting positions in relation to the sun. Ryder wondered if the sun played its own part in the curse, and if so, why?
He knew the problem was that he was looking at things from a scientific point of view and that had no bearing on magic. The curse was supposed to have come from some great moon spirit, something he had trouble believing in despite all he had seen and experienced. It was just too hard for him to grasp that there was some god-like being tied to the moon.
And yet, the dream speakers had called upon that spirit to create the lycans. Ryder supposed that, in the end, it didnât make much of a difference whether the Native American mystics had simply used their own power and attributed it to the moon spirit or if they really had connected with such an otherworldly being. He didnât need to understand in order to pursue a cure.
It was just that being a werewolf had opened his eyes to a world he had never known before and it was overwhelming. Now he looked up at the starry sky and he could feel the moon up there, even if his eyes couldnât perceive it. He felt connected to the Earth, like he was a piece of some great tapestry. It was hard to remember what it was like before the curse, when his senses had been so limited.
Two weeks had passed since the first time he had turned. He had expected his wolf to curl up and go to sleep as the moon waned down to a thin sliver and then disappeared altogether, but such was not the case. His other spirit had quieted and grown less demanding, but it was still there. Like Matchitehew had said, just like the moon, the spirit would wax and wane but never leave him entirely.
Ryder found some comfort in that. He had grown accustomed to that wise, mystical and slightly feral awareness inside of him. Ryder knew that was foolish. Their goal was to cure themselves, which would banish the wolf spirits forever. It was a mistake to get attached, but as closely linked as he was with his wolf, it was hard to avoid doing so.
